Horseback Riding for Beginners

American riding today is composed of a greater variety of horsemanship than has ever before existed in one country at one time. It certainly includes the best of the old traditional "educated" or school riding. It also includes much that the Spaniards learned from the Moors and brought to our shores. Even the American Indian added a few tricks to our trade.
Yes, our horsemanship, like our language, is a blend of contributions from many lands. But there is a new, unique quality that our horsemanship has. This quality arises from a relationship between horse and man that is brand new.
Modern American riding calls for a relationship between horse and rider that is somewhat like that of partners in ballroom dancing. This relationship is most obvious in the two most intensely American fields of riding, the riding of American Saddle Horse and Western riding. With both, we will consider the selection of the horse, the care of the personal mount and of his tack, the handling of the horse in a trailer, the shoeing of the horse and the problems of the young rider.
Sections include: For the Beginner, Variety in American Riding, Selecting the Personal Mount, Selecting a Registered Horse, Care of the Personal Mount, Equipment, and Attaining Proficiency.
