We will never get to the point where we can pick the winner in every race, but we can correctly predetermine enough of them at sufficiently high mutual payoffs so that our gross return will consistently exceed our investment.
There is a reason for everything that happens in racing. If the favorite is beaten by a long shot, there is a reason. If the speed horse is beaten by a slower one, there is a reason. Often it is the same reason – peak condition, or the loss of it. But condition alone is not the whole answer. Essentially, it is the validating factor. If we isolate a horse that has shown superior speed, on superior class, or superior consistency, and we can also convince ourselves that he is now at or near peak form, we then – and only then – have a sound and solid investment. We have the percentages with us.
No one has ever beat the races consistently by relying on luck. So, let's leave the luck to the gamblers. With the percentages in our favor, who needs it?
