Schooling Your Young Horse
by George Wheatley
Schooling Your Horse
The world's horse population is now undergoing an explosion similar to that which the human race itself is experiencing. Consequently, there are more and more people buying more and more horses – and then being faced with the problem of caring for and training the innocent, appealing young animal they have just purchased.

Schooling Your Young Horse is certain to prove an invaluable aid to you as you attempt to do what is right for you and your animal, for, as the author points out, "it is your responsibility, as its owner, to form, create and mold its temperament, character and action."

The horse owner who has purchased a well-schooled horse is fortunate indeed. Of course, few horses are completely free of faults, but the large majority receive little or no training in their formative years, or, if they have received training it has often been of the wrong kind.

The author stresses patience: "This is the first and most important criterion. [The horse] should never learn through fear, but be taught through kindness. Nearly all the vices which horses have – rearing, biting, kicking – can be traced back to bad handling at the beginning of their lives."

With the aid of dozens of photographs and line drawings, the author takes you through the various steps you will need to master in order to train your horse properly. Beginning with first year handling, discipline, and stable manners, Mr. Weatley progresses through the second, third, and fourth years to mounting, backing, jumping, elementary dressage, work on two tracks, and boxing. He concludes with a summary of his entire training method.

When you have completed training your horse according to the method Mr. Weatley has so competently demonstrated, you should have a "well-schooled and obedient horse, well-mannered both in and out of the stable." He should prove to be a pleasant companion, who is easy to handle and ride no matter what difficulties you may encounter.

The ultimate goal should be a happy, cooperative horse. Schooling Your Young Horse should go a long way toward making your horse-owning experience and altogether pleasurable one.
