The Story of Israel in Coins
by Jean & Maurice M. Gould
|
 |
It was the 14th of May, 1948 in Tel Aviv, when David Ben-Gurion read Israel's Proclamation of Independence and Israel was born.
Israel was born in chaos and turmoil. President Harry S. Truman recognized Israel within a few hours and it was only minutes before Egyptian bombs were being dropped on Tel Aviv.
Seven Arab States with a population of more than 40 million people marched against the newborn country, so there was no choice but a struggle for its life.
After the War of Independence, the greatest achievement of Israel was the rescue of many hundreds of thousands of Jews from all parts of the world, as well as worthwhile achievements in industry, agriculture and politics.
The Jewish immigrant who came to Israel became a new breed, leaving behind him more than 2,000 years of fear, suffering and persecution.
When Mark Twain visited Palestine, he called it a "hopeless, dreary, heartbroken land," but modern Israel, with its irrigated land which produces so many varieties of vegetables, oranges, dates, bananas, grapefruit, wheat and barley, refutes the statement, the results of the spirit and perseverance of the pioneers of the new land.
